An Oral Cancer Vaccine?

by Berkeley Wellness

The HPV vaccine now given to girls and young women (and recommended for males at certain ages) to protect against cervical cancer may also protect against oral cancer.

A 2011 study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that strains of HPV (human papillomavirus) that cause cervical and anal cancer are causing an increasing number of cases of oral cancer—mostly in men, and usually of the tonsils and base of the tongue. For these cancers, the virus is believed to be transmitted via oral sex. Previous research found that the HPV vaccine also helps prevent anal cancer and genital warts.
