FIT Test for Colorectal Cancer

by Berkeley Wellness

The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is a highly accurate way to screen for colorectal cancer, a research review in the Annals of Internal Medicine recently confirmed, on the basis of 19 studies.

Unlike older stool tests, FIT identifies antigens in stool that indicate the presence of blood originating in the colon or rectum; it can’t be thrown off by food or medication. If blood is detected, a colonoscopy will be required. Annual FIT is a good screening option particularly for people who prefer not to have a colonoscopy (every 10 years) or sigmoidoscopy (every five years).
