Here's another reason to get the flu shot: By preventing the flu and its serious complications, it can also reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke, especially in older people who already have cardiovascular disease.
That was confirmed by a recent meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which included data from six clinical trials of people at high cardiovascular risk. The greatest benefit was seen in those at highest risk. For instance, vaccination was associated with a 55 percent reduction in the odds of having another cardiovascular event in patients who recently had a heart attack. It’s not too late to get the shot now.
