Constipated? Try This Self-Help Technique

by Berkeley Wellness

If you suffer from constipation, consider “perineal self-acupressure.” This East-meets-West technique involves pressing on the perineum (the area between the anus and genitals) with your middle and index fingers, pushing up toward your back in repeated pulses right before you attempt to defecate.

In a November 2014 UCLA study, 72 percent of people with chronic constipation who used the technique for four weeks reported that it helped them “avoid or better manage the effects of constipation.” In addition, 54 percent reported that it helped them avoid or reduce the severity of hemorrhoids, which are related to constipation. The participants also received educational materials about standard treatment options for constipation, such as increasing fiber intake, taking stool softeners, and getting more exercise.
