Glucosamine Supplements

Glucosamine supplements do not help relieve osteoarthritis. In a new 24-week study from the University of Arizona, glucosamine did not reduce knee cartilage damage (as seen in MRIs), relieve pain, or improve function better than a placebo in people with osteoarthritis of the knee.

This confirms the findings of the large NIH-sponsored GAIT study, which a few years ago found that glucosamine (with or without chondroitin sulfate) did not reduce arthritis pain more than a placebo over a two-year period, nor did it reduce cartilage loss.
