Beware of "Up To" Claims

by Berkeley Wellness

Beware of “up to” claims made for drugs, supplements and other health-related products. Some examples: “lose up to 10 pounds a week” and “reduce arthritis pain by up to 50 percent.”

About one-third of people overlook the words “up to” and assume they’ll get the maximum result, according to a recent study by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which focused on ads made for energy-efficient windows. The FTC warned the window makers that such claims are exaggerated, misleading and deceptive; the companies pulled the ads.

An “up to” promise on a health-related product, in particular, should make you skeptical of all the claims.
