St. John's Wort and Medications

by Berkeley Wellness

Avoid the herbal antidepressant St. John’s wort if you’re on certain medications.

It has long been known that the supplement can interfere with many drugs and/or cause other adverse effects, but the Center for Science in the Public Interest has petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to require prominent warning labels on St. John’s wort about interactions with contraceptives, antidepressants, immunosuppressants (such as cyclosporine), anticoagulants, digoxin, HIV medicine, seizure medication and cancer drugs.

Unlike drugs, dietary supplements are not required to carry any such warning labels.
