Americans Are Having Less Sex

by Berkeley Wellness  |

Americans are having less sex than their parents or grandparents did at their age.

A recent study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that, overall, adults report having sex about 9 fewer times per year than 20 years ago (declining from about 62 to 53 times, on average). This was largely due to the rising proportion of people without steady partners, who have sex about half as often, on average, as their partnered counterparts the same age (married or not), as well as to decreasing sexual frequency among those with steady partners.

Sexual frequency declines markedly with age, the study found, peaking at about 80 times a year in people in their twenties and declining to about 20 times a year by their sixties. The overall decline “does not appear to be due to longer work hours or the greater use of pornography, both of which were instead associated with higher sexual frequency,” the researchers said.
