Testosterone Therapy & Heart Risks

by Berkeley Wellness  |

If you are a man considering testosterone therapy, talk with your doctor about the risks, especially of heart attacks. Recently, the largest study examining heart disease in men prescribed testosterone, published online in PLOS ONE, confirmed previous findings—that those over 65 taking the hormone doubled their risk of heart attack during the first three months.

What’s more, it found that the risk more than doubled in men under 65 who already had heart disease. As a result of this and other recent studies, the Endocrine Society stated that men considering testosterone therapy should be informed of the potential cardiovascular risks.

Many men are being prescribed testosterone even though they don’t have low blood levels or symptoms, and even though the therapy has been linked to a host of potential adverse effects.
