Q:Is it okay to take my statin the morning I’m having my cholesterol measured, after fasting overnight?
A:Yes. It doesn’t matter, since what’s being measured is the effect the statin has had during the weeks before the test. The pill taken that morning has only a minor impact. Statins work gradually on cholesterol metabolism, which is why doctors usually wait at least several weeks before checking the results via follow-up blood work.
By the way, it’s better to take most statins in the evening, since cholesterol synthesis occurs primarily at night. The exceptions: atorvastatin (brand name Lipitor) and rosuvastatin (Crestor), which are longest acting, can be taken any time of day.
