The Prediabetes-Cancer Link

by Berkeley Wellness

If you have prediabetes, getting your blood sugar under control may reduce the risk of cancer, according to an analysis of 16 studies published in November 2014 inDiabetologia. People with diabetes are at higher risk for certain cancers—notably liver, breast, colon, pancreatic, and bladder—but this new paper found that people with moderately impaired blood sugar control are also at elevated risk.

The researchers only included studies that controlled for obesity, which is an important risk factor for both diabetes and cancer. Potential biological links between prediabetes and cancer include chronic high blood sugar, insulin resistance, and inflammation.
