People With Asthma: Skip the Cold Cuts

If you have asthma, cutting down on processed (cured) meats may help reduce symptoms, suggests a recent study in the journal Thorax.

Researchers followed 971 French adults with asthma over seven years and found that those who ate cured meat (such as ham, sausage, salami, and bacon) at least four times a week were 75 percent more likely to have a worsening of symptoms than those who ate it once a week or not at all. The re­­searchers controlled for variables such as body weight, age, exercise, and smoking.

Cured meats are usually high in nitrites or nitrates, which may lead to airway inflammation, the researchers suggested.
