Can Dogs Be Hypoallergenic?

by Berkeley Wellness

If you’re allergic to dogs, you may fare no better with a “hypoallergenic breed,” suggests a recent study published in the American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy.

It found similar levels of dog allergens (analyzed from dust samples) in homes that had either so-called hypoallergenic dogs or other dogs. This is despite widespread claims that some dogs (including Bo and Sunny Obama, which are both Portuguese Water Dog) are less allergenic because they produce less dander and saliva and shed less.

Exposure to dogs in infancy may help prevent allergies, previous research suggests. But once an allergy develops, there’s no breed guaranteed to not make you sneeze or wheeze. It’s possible to be less allergic to one particular dog than another—but breed apparently has nothing to do with it.
