Baldness & Your Heart

by Berkeley Wellness

Men who are balding on the top of the head (but not those with only a receding hairline) are at increased risk for coronary artery disease, according to an analysis of six large studies, recently published in BMJ Open.

Thus, they have even more reason to control proven coronary risk factors, such as undesirable cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and obesity.

The risk increases with the severity of hair loss. There’s no clear explanation for the association, though systemic inflammation, insulin resistance and hormones (androgens) may be directly or indirectly involved with both heart disease and baldness.
