Are You at Risk for Falling?

Some factors put people at higher risk than others for falling. These include:

  • Previous falls
  • Lower body weakness
  • Balance problems
  • Poor vision or use of multifocal lenses
  • Advanced age
  • Foot or ankle disorders
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Alcohol use
  • Postural hypotension (a temporary drop in blood pressure upon standing)
  • Chronic conditions such as arthritis, stroke, diabetes, incontinence, Parkinson’s disease, and cognitive impairment
  • Use of certain medications, including sleeping pills, antidepressants, antihistamines, and blood pressure drugs
