Lose Weight, Ease Knee Pain

by Berkeley Wellness

If you’re overweight and have osteoarthritis, especially of the knee, losing weight can significantly alleviate symptoms.

By increasing wear and tear on weight-bearing joints, obesity worsens cartilage breakdown and arthritis pain.

But possibly more important are the systemic effects of obesity, concludes a new review article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. For instance, obesity increases inflammation and causes other metabolic changes that can contribute to arthritis.

And if you are overweight and don't have arthritis of the knee, losing excess weight can help prevent the development of the disease. Obesity doubles the risk.
