This Drug Prevent Prostate Cancer?
You may be surprised to hear that five years ago a large, long-awaited
federal study found that a drug widely used to treat the urinary
symptoms caused by prostate enlargement also reduces the risk of
prostate cancer by 25%. The drug is finasteride; its brand name
is Proscar. There was one problem, however: the study concluded
that the drug reduced the risk of insignificant cancers, but seemed
to increase the risk of more aggressive types. That finding largely
quashed the hopes about finasteride as a preventive for prostate
cancer—for a while. Recently, however, several analyses of
the research, using more thorough and complete data, have shown
that the initial scary finding about finasteride was misleading—that
ultimately men taking finasteride had lower rates of all types
of prostate cancer, including the aggressive ones. So why aren’t
men dancing in the street, and all their doctors prescribing them
