Soy: A Good Source of Protein

by Berkeley Wellness

Don’t overlook soy as an excellent source of protein. A new study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry confirms that soy is equal in quality to animal-based proteins.

In particular, isolated soy protein and soy protein concentrate (found in processed soy foods) scored as high as eggs, dairy and meat, based on a standard formula that takes into account a protein’s amino acid profile, as well as how easily the protein is digested.

Other plant foods, including beans, peas, wheat, nuts and rice, ranked lower—and thus must be consumed (over the course of a day) with other proteins to get all the amino acids needed to make a “complete” protein.
