Pouring Wine? Use the 'Half-Glass Rule'

by Berkeley Wellness

If you’re trying to keep your alcohol intake moderate, use the “half-glass rule” when pouring wine. “Moderate” means one serving a day for women, two for men; a serving of wine is 5 ounces.

People tend to underestimate how much alcohol they pour and thus exceed standard serving sizes. In a 2014 study in the International Journal of Drug Policy, people were asked to pour wine as they normally would into glasses of different sizes and shapes.

Those who said they used the half-glass rule poured 20 to 30 percent less wine than those who poured freely (4 to 5 ounces, on average, instead of 5 to 7 ounces).

This is a very rough rule of thumb— for accuracy, use a measuring cup to see what 5 ounces of wine looks like in your glasses.
