Cycling Soreness

If bicycle riding is a sore subject, try raising the handlebars.

Pressure from the saddle can cause numbness and pain in the genitals and perineum (between the genitals and anus) as well as nerve damage and sexual dysfunction, not just in men, but also in women.

As shown in a study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, which included 48 women cyclists, handlebars that were lower than the seat increased pressure on the perineum and decreased vaginal and labial sensation. Set the handlebars high enough so that you are sitting upright.

Other tips: adjust the saddle’s angle to a more horizontal position; set its height so that you don’t wobble from side to side as you pedal; try a wider seat (especially if you have hemorrhoids) or one with strategically placed cutouts; get a gel cushion that goes over the seat and make sure the bike has good shock absorbers
